IELTS online test – The IELTS Indicator is making a name of itself, learn more

Wondering what the latest buzz on the IELTS indicator is all about? Check out this quick lowdown on this test-launched by IELTS, and how to make the best possible use of it, especially now that we are stuck at home under lockdown because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

As college graduates get ready to take on the world through international studies. Few are thinking ahead about the possible speed bumps on their path. That obstacle would be eligibility tests. One that requires a test of your proficiency in the language. Most universities in the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and a few European Universities favor English. Since English is not our primary language, as an Indian student, you will need a language proficiency test. Much before you apply for any courses abroad.

  • There are many tests that prove your proficiency in English. Of which, the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is the most important.
  • In fact, some universities weigh your application based on your score in IELTS alone.
  • Every year, more than two million students around the world take this exam. They take the test not only to study abroad but also as part of their visa application for jobs.
  • India happens to be one of the top countries using this test. More exams are administered here than most countries, globally. Quite a high percentage of test-takers in India achieve an advanced level score. Like a 7+ band score and above.

But there are lockdown and travel restrictions in place. This has left students and aspiring job applicants in India cut off from the test centers. Most are unable to visit teaching sessions and examination halls. Keeping this information in mind, the British Council quickly launched an online test—the IELTS Indicator.

About IELTS

Just like GRE, GMAT, and other international tests, IELTS is an international test in English. It is very popular as more than 10,000 institutions accept it. The IELTS is crucial to your application process when you want to study abroad. For more information, you can visit www.takeielts.britishcouncil.org.

What is an IELTS Indicator?

The IELTS Indicator is like a test that you can take online. Those who are familiar with the regular exam from IELTS will find this test familiar. The test has four exams. These exams gauge your skills in four areas in how well you know English. The modules will test your English Listening and Reading skills. As well as your Writing and Speaking skills in English. As you complete the four modules, you will receive an “indicative” score for each. Coming to your performance in the test — dedicated examiners will mark your responses in each section. After this, you will receive your result on the test within one week’s time.

Is the IELTS Indicator the same as a real Test?

The short answer is no. This IELTS Indicator is a part of a much larger program from the British Council—the organization that runs IELTS. Having said that, the test is in place to ensure students test English language skills when they can not move out. The test will be there until normalcy returns, wherein the test centers will open again to begin their exams. As per the official website, this test is “available for a limited time while IELTS testing is currently suspended due to COVID-19.”

The test provides indicative scores that indicate your level of fluency in the English language. But that does not mean the test is of no use. Some universities and educational institutions are accepting the scores of this online test. Especially now that future University students are unable to take the original test because of lockdowns in place.

The official website advises that you must check with your university beforehand. You must find out whether they will accept this test score for admissions or not as there are still many organizations that do not accept admissions— only on the basis of an Indicator score.

Other than students, this test from IELTS is not applicable to certain people. Especially people who are applying to jobs abroad. The British Council Website says that the test is not designed to gauge your language skills for immigration purposes.
