Why the Seahawks are adding offensive lineman Chance Warmack

While fans of the Seattle Seahawks eagerly await news on the status of free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, the team has been busy amassing a trove of offensive linemen in recent days. First the team brought B.J. Finney in from the Pittsburgh Steelers, then they added Brandon Shell from the New York Jets and finally Cedric Ogbuehi from the Jacksonville Jaguars. That seemed to be a significant enough influx of new linemen, but on Sunday reports emerged that yet another free agent offensive lineman is set to sign with the team.

Chance Warmack is the type of big-bodied, long-armed guard that offensive line coach Mike Solari loves. Coming out of Alabama in 2013, Warmack was just 6’2” even at the NFL Combine, however, his arms measured 34-3/4”, with an 81-1/8” wingspan.

Touted as one of the best guards in the draft that year, he struggled at times in his career, and after receiving praise for his early play, the Tennessee Titans moved on from him after declining his fifth year option. He then spent consecutive seasons playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, but started only three games over the course of the two years.

In any case, he’s yet another member of the 2013 first round who has found their way to the Seahawks. The other members of the 2013 first round that have played for the Hawks over the years include:

Warmack was taken with the tenth overall pick, one selection before Fluker, who has been the starter at right guard in each of the past two seasons. As such, there is a chance that the Seahawks will have two former first round guards starting during the 2020 season. This is not to say Warmack will be handed a starting role. He was out of football for the 2019 season, so there’s no guarantee he even makes the roster.

That said, he’s certainly another depth addition who will compete with the like of Finney, Justin Britt, Phil Haynes, Demetrius Knox and Jamarco Jones on the interior in 2020.
